How to Transfer a Domain to InterProWebHost
Pointing a domain at your hosting and transferring a domain are two different things. Pointing tells visitors where your website lives. Transferring moves the domain’s registration itself, so renewals, settings, and billing all live in one place. If you would rather manage your domain and hosting together, this article walks you through transferring your domain to InterProWebHost from start to finish.
Before you start: check these requirements
Domain transfers have a few rules set by the industry, not by us. Your domain must have been registered or last transferred more than 60 days ago. It must be unlocked at your current registrar. And you must be able to receive email at the domain’s administrative contact address, because you will get an approval email during the process. If any of these are not true yet, sort them out first and the transfer itself will be smooth.
Step 1: Unlock your domain
Log in to your current registrar, open the domain’s settings, and turn off the registrar lock (sometimes called a transfer lock or domain lock). This is a security feature that prevents unauthorized transfers, and it must be off for the transfer to proceed. You can turn it back on after the transfer completes.
Step 2: Get your transfer code
While you are in your current registrar’s settings, request the authorization code, also called an EPP code or transfer key. It is a short string of characters that proves you own the domain. Some registrars show it instantly in the control panel. Others email it to the administrative contact. Keep it handy.
Step 3: Start the transfer at InterProWebHost
Go to the InterProWebHost website and start a domain transfer order for your domain name. You will enter the domain and the authorization code from Step 2, then complete checkout. Transfer pricing and terms are shown before you pay, so there are no surprises. Note that most transfers include a one year renewal of the domain, applied at the gaining registrar.
Step 4: Approve the transfer email
Shortly after you place the order, the administrative contact email address receives a transfer approval email. Open it and approve the transfer. This step is required. If nobody approves, the transfer simply expires and nothing changes. Check spam folders if you do not see it within an hour or two.
Step 5: Wait for completion
Once approved, the losing registrar has up to five days to release the domain, though most release it much faster, often within a day or two. You do not need to do anything during this wait. When the transfer completes, the domain appears in your InterProWebHost client area under My Domains, and future renewals happen with us.
Will my website or email go down?
A domain transfer changes who you pay for the registration. It does not by itself change your nameservers or DNS. If your website and email are working now, they keep working through the transfer, as long as you do not change DNS settings at the same time. If you also want to point the domain at InterProWebHost hosting, do the transfer first, then follow How to Point Your Domain to InterProWebHost.
What if the transfer fails?
The usual causes are a wrong authorization code, the domain still being locked, or the approval email going unanswered. Fix the issue and try again. If the domain was registered or transferred within the last 60 days, you will need to wait out the remainder of that period. There is no way around the 60 day rule.
Still stuck? Open a support ticket with your domain name and where it is currently registered. We will check the transfer status and tell you the next step.
