Download files with FileZilla to keep a local copy of selected website files or a directory. Downloading copies the files rather than removing them from hosting. For a database-driven website, these files alone are not a complete backup; the database must be exported separately.
Before you start
- Connect using your hosting service's supported secure protocol and confirm you are authorized to copy the selected content.
- Choose a private local destination with enough free space. Website configuration files can contain sensitive information, so avoid public or casually shared folders.
Instructions
Choose the local destination
In FileZilla's local pane on the left, open or create a clearly named folder for this download. Keep it separate from an existing working copy to avoid accidental overwrites.
Locate the remote content
In the remote pane on the right, open the intended website directory. Compare it with the site's document root so you do not copy another website by mistake.
Start the download
Select the required remote files or folders, right-click, and choose Download. Review any overwrite prompt carefully if a matching local filename already exists.
Monitor completion
Let the transfer queue finish, then review Failed transfers and the message log. Resolve errors and retry failed items before treating the download as complete.
Check backup coverage
Inspect the downloaded folder and open representative files. Include required hidden configuration files where accessible, and export databases separately if the website depends on them.
Check the result
- The selected files are present in the intended local folder and failed transfers have been resolved.
- Your backup notes identify the source website, download date, and any databases or external files still required for restoration.
Troubleshooting
- Some files are missing locally.
- Check failed transfers, account permissions, and whether the files were selected or visible remotely. Compare important filenames instead of relying only on folder size.
- The downloaded copy does not run as a website.
- A local file copy may still need a compatible runtime, database, configuration, and external services. Keep those requirements with the backup.
