Install FileZilla on Windows to transfer files between your computer and an authorized hosting account. You need FileZilla Client, which connects to a server. FileZilla Server is a different application and is not required for uploading your website to hosting.
Installer screens and supported Windows versions change. Follow the current official download page; the video may show an older installer.
Before you start
- Check the Windows build and system requirements listed on the official FileZilla Client download page. Use the current compatible release rather than a version shown in an older video.
- Keep your hosting connection details ready for later, but do not enter them into a download website or installer. Installation does not require your hosting password.
Instructions
Open the official download page
Go to the FileZilla Project website and choose its Client download for Windows. Confirm the address is filezilla-project.org before downloading the application.
Choose the appropriate package
Select the Windows build offered for your system. Review the download choices and any optional offers carefully so you install only the software you intend to use.
Run the downloaded installer
Open the downloaded setup file. If Windows displays an unexpected publisher or security warning, stop and verify the download source rather than bypassing the warning automatically.
Review installation settings
Follow the setup prompts, reviewing the license, components, user scope, and destination folder as applicable. Choose settings appropriate for your computer and account permissions.
Launch FileZilla Client
Finish setup and open the client. Locate Site Manager for saved connection settings. Configure the secure protocol your hosting service supports before entering server credentials.
Check the result
- FileZilla Client opens with local and remote file panes and a transfer queue.
- The installed application is the Client, and the Windows desktop does not need to run an FTP server for this task.
Troubleshooting
- Windows reports the package is incompatible.
- Compare your system with the current official requirements and choose a supported package. Avoid unofficial repackaged downloads.
- The application is installed but not connected.
- Installation and connection are separate. Obtain the host, protocol, username, password or key, and port from your hosting service.
