Create or delete a directory in FileZilla from the remote file pane when organizing files on your hosting account. The remote pane controls server files, while the local pane controls your computer. Deleting a remote folder can also remove everything inside it.
Menu labels can vary slightly by FileZilla version. Always confirm whether the selected pane and path refer to your computer or the remote server.
Before you start
- Connect securely with an account authorized to manage the intended directory. Confirm the server and website before making changes.
- Download a backup of anything you might delete and check for website dependencies. Remote deletion should not be treated as recoverable through your computer's recycle bin.
Instructions
Locate the parent directory
In the remote pane on the right, open the directory that should contain the new folder or the folder you intend to remove. Check the displayed remote path.
Create a folder if needed
Right-click in the remote file list and choose Create directory. Enter the intended folder name or review the proposed path, then confirm.
Check a folder before deletion
For removal, open the target folder and inspect its contents first. Confirm it is not the site's document root or a folder still used by an application.
Delete only the intended directory
Return to its parent, select that folder, and choose Delete. Read the confirmation carefully, including any recursive deletion of files and subfolders, before proceeding.
Review the operation result
Wait for FileZilla to finish and refresh the remote listing. Check the message log for permission or connection errors rather than assuming every requested deletion succeeded.
Check the result
- A newly created folder appears under the intended remote parent, or the selected deleted folder is absent.
- The website still loads and other required files remain in their original locations.
Troubleshooting
- Permission denied appears.
- Check the account's allowed directory and file ownership. Do not set broad write permissions simply to bypass an unexplained restriction.
- A folder remains after deletion.
- Inspect the error log and remaining contents. Hidden files, access restrictions, or an interrupted connection may prevent complete removal.
