How to Add an Addon Domain in cPanel

Add an addon domain in cPanel to host another website with its own files on the same hosting account. Unlike an alias, it uses a separate document root. The domain must also be registered and connected to your hosting through DNS.

The video may use an Addon Domains screen. Current cPanel versions use Domains; clear document-root sharing to create a separate website.

Before you start

  • Confirm your hosting plan allows another website and that you control the domain's DNS settings.
  • Choose a distinct website folder. Reusing an existing site's folder can make the new domain display that site's content instead.

Instructions

  1. Start a new domain entry

    In cPanel, open Domains and choose Create a New Domain. If prompted for a type, select Registered Domain for your own domain.

  2. Separate the website files

    Enter the full domain without a protocol or path. Clear the option to share the primary domain's document root so this site can use its own directory.

  3. Review the document root

    Choose an allowed folder and review any associated subdomain field cPanel displays. Record the final document root before submitting; it identifies where this website's files belong.

  4. Connect and publish

    Configure DNS using your hosting details, then upload or install the website in the recorded folder. If DNS is hosted externally, make the DNS changes at that provider.

  5. Check the certificate

    Confirm HTTPS works for the new domain. Certificate issuance depends on the account's SSL configuration and domain validation; creating a domain entry alone does not guarantee immediate coverage.

Check the result

  • Domains shows the correct address with its separate document root.
  • The new address opens its intended website, and the existing website still works.

Troubleshooting

The primary website appears instead.
Check whether document-root sharing was selected and inspect the files in the displayed root.
cPanel will not add another domain.
Check the account's domain allowance and whether the domain already exists as an alias or other hosting entry. Contact support if the restriction is unclear.
