Create an FTP account in cPanel to transfer website files without sharing your main hosting login. A separate account can be restricted to one directory and its subdirectories. FTP accounts use FTP or FTPS where supported; they are not automatically SSH or SFTP accounts.
Available FTP controls depend on the server configuration. Quota settings are supported with Pure-FTPd but not ProFTPD.
Before you start
- Confirm FTP Accounts is available on your hosting service. If it is missing, ask which file-transfer methods your account supports.
- Find the intended site's document root in Domains. Choose the narrowest directory needed, since the FTP user can modify files throughout its permitted folder tree.
Instructions
Open FTP Accounts
In cPanel, open FTP Accounts and locate the new-account form. Enter a suitable login name and select the domain associated with the account.
Set a strong password
Enter and confirm a unique password, or use the password generator. Store the password securely for the authorized person who will use this account.
Check directory access
Review the Directory field carefully. Replace the proposed folder if it is not the intended website directory; a default folder may point below the site's actual document root.
Choose an available quota
If quota controls appear, set an appropriate limit or the permitted unlimited option. An unlimited FTP quota does not remove the hosting plan's overall storage limits.
Create and record the settings
Create the account. Open its client configuration or manual settings and copy the exact username, server, and connection details. The username may include the domain.
Check the result
- The new account appears with the intended directory and quota.
- Connect using the supported secure protocol and confirm you see only the intended folder tree.
Troubleshooting
- The login fails in FileZilla.
- Use the complete username shown in cPanel, then check the server, protocol, password, and port.
- You cannot reach another website folder.
- The account is restricted to its assigned directory. Create an appropriately scoped account instead of sharing the main hosting password.
