How to Change an FTP Account Password in cPanel

Change an FTP password in cPanel when a separate file-transfer account needs new credentials. Update every authorized client that uses that account afterward. The change applies to that FTP account, not automatically to your customer-area login, SSH account, or other FTP users.

Before you start

  • Identify the exact FTP username, including its domain when present. Check which people, applications, or scheduled jobs use it.
  • Prepare a unique replacement password and a secure way to store it. Never include a password in a support ticket or ordinary email.

Instructions

  1. Find the account

Open FTP Accounts in cPanel and locate the username under the regular FTP accounts list. Confirm its directory so you do not change another user's credentials.

  2. Enter the new password

Choose Change Password beside the account. Enter the new password in both fields, or use the generator and save the generated value securely.

  3. Save the change

Submit the password change and wait for confirmation. If the password is rejected, follow the displayed requirements rather than reusing a weak or shared password.

  4. Update transfer clients

Replace the old password in FileZilla's saved connection or enter the new value when prompted. Update any approved automated transfers that use the same FTP account.

  5. Start a fresh connection

Disconnect the client and reconnect using the complete username and new password. Test a new login; an already connected session is not proof that the replacement works.

Check the result

  • A fresh connection succeeds with the new password and reaches the expected directory.
  • Scheduled transfers using this account resume successfully without repeated authentication errors.

Troubleshooting

Change Password is unavailable for a special account.
The primary FTP login follows the hosting account credentials. Confirm the appropriate hosting-password procedure with support rather than changing an unrelated FTP user.
The client still reports incorrect credentials.
Check for an old saved password, trailing spaces, or an incomplete username. Verify the supported protocol; a separate FTP account cannot be assumed to work with SFTP.
