Forwarding creates a new outgoing message containing an existing conversation. Use it when another person needs the information, rather than replying to the original sender. This action forwards selected mail only; it does not create ongoing mailbox forwarding.
Before you start
- Check that the correct sending account is configured and that you have permission to share the conversation and attachments with the new recipient.
- Open the complete message so you can review earlier replies, addresses and files. A long thread may contain information beyond the latest response.
Instructions
Select the message
Choose the required email in the message list and select Forward. You can also use the Message menu's forwarding option if the toolbar is hidden.
Address the new message
Enter the destination address in To and check every suggested recipient before accepting it. Confirm the From address if Thunderbird contains multiple accounts.
Add useful context
Explain why you are forwarding the email and what the recipient needs to do. Review the included conversation and remove unnecessary material before sending.
Review files and send
Check which attachments are included and remove any that should not be shared. Select Send after reviewing the destination, subject and full message.
Check the result
- Look for the forwarded message in the sending account's Sent folder. If it remains queued, check the Outbox and connection status before sending another copy.
Troubleshooting
- A needed attachment is missing
- Inspect the forwarding composition and the original email. Add the required file only after confirming it is the correct version and appropriate to share.
- The message will not send
- Try a short message without attachments to distinguish a file-size problem from an SMTP problem. Use the provider's attachment limits and verified outgoing-server settings.
