Dozens of reports, unfamiliar terms, and charts everywhere. Most small business owners need only a handful of answers: where are my visitors coming from, what are they looking at, and is any of it turning into business? By the end of this article, you will know the five reports that answer those questions and what to do with what they tell you.

Getting it installed

If Analytics is not on your site yet, start at analytics.google.com, sign in with your Google account, and create a property for your website. Google will give you a measurement ID, a short code beginning with G, that connects your site to your new property. The simplest way to install it on a WordPress site is with Google’s free Site Kit plugin, which connects Analytics and Search Console in a few clicks without touching code. Once installed, give it a day or two to start collecting data before you judge any report.

Report 1: Traffic acquisition, or where visitors come from

Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. This shows your visitors grouped by channel: organic search, direct, social, referral, and so on. This is your marketing report card. If you have been working on SEO, organic search should be growing over months. If you post on social media, you should see that effort reflected here. When a channel you invest in shows nothing, that is a signal to change tactics, not to guess.

Report 2: Pages and screens, or what they actually read

Open Reports, then Engagement, then Pages and screens. This lists your pages by views. Your most-visited pages deserve your best content, because they are your hardest-working salespeople. If a services page gets lots of views but few enquiries, the page needs a clearer call to action, not more traffic. If a blog post you wrote months ago keeps pulling visitors, write more like it. Let this report tell you what your audience wants, then give them more of it.

Report 3: Engagement, or whether they stay

In the same Engagement section, look at average engagement time per session. This tells you whether visitors actually read or just bounce. A page with high views and very low engagement time is a page that promises something the content does not deliver. Common fixes: a clearer opening that matches the page title that brought them there, shorter paragraphs, and getting to the point faster. Compare engagement across pages to spot your weakest content.

Report 4: Demographics and tech, or who they are

Open Reports, then User, then Demographic details and Tech details. These show the age ranges, locations, and devices of your visitors. The device breakdown matters most for small businesses: if most of your visitors are on phones, your site must be excellent on phones, full stop. Location data tells you whether your local SEO is reaching the right area. If you serve one city and most visitors come from elsewhere, your targeting needs work.

Report 5: Conversions, or what turned into business

Traffic without outcomes is just vanity. In GA4, the actions that matter, like form submissions, phone number clicks, or quote requests, are tracked as events, and the important ones can be marked as key events, the current term for conversions. Work with whoever manages your site to set up tracking for your main contact actions. Then check Reports, then Engagement, then Conversions regularly. This single report tells you whether your website is earning its keep.

A monthly habit, not a daily obsession

Check these five reports once a month, not once a day. Daily numbers bounce around meaninglessly. Monthly trends tell the real story: is organic search growing, which pages earn attention, and are conversions rising? Write down the three numbers that matter most to you each month and compare. Pair this habit with Search Console Basics, which shows you the search side of the same picture: what Google shows and what people click.

Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us your domain name and whether Analytics is already installed. We will help you get the basics in place.

Google Analytics 4 can feel overwhelming.
