But what does that padlock actually promise? By the end of this article, you will understand what an SSL certificate does, what the different types mean for your business, and just as importantly, what SSL does not do.

What SSL does in plain language

SSL, which technically goes by the newer name TLS, creates a private, encrypted connection between your visitor’s browser and your website. Anything sent over that connection, contact form entries, login details, checkout information, is scrambled so that anyone listening in between cannot read it. Without SSL, that same information travels as readable text that can be intercepted on public Wi-Fi and other shared networks.

The certificate itself also proves that the website belongs to the domain name in the address bar. When the browser shows the padlock, it has verified the certificate and established an encrypted session. That is the entire promise: a private connection to the genuine site.

The padlock is about the connection, not the business

This is the most misunderstood part. A padlock means the connection is encrypted and the domain is verified. It does not mean the business behind the site is legitimate, the content is accurate, or the site is free of malware. Scam websites use SSL too. So while your visitors should feel reassured by your padlock, you should think of SSL as one layer of your security, not the whole thing. See WordPress Security Checklist: 12 Essentials for the other layers.

The three validation levels

Certificates come in three validation levels, which describe how thoroughly the business was checked before the certificate was issued.

Domain Validation (DV). Proves control of the domain name only. This is what most small business websites use, including free certificates. The encryption is the same as the more expensive options.

Organization Validation (OV). The certificate authority also verifies that the business is real, checking registration details. Suited to companies where visitors care about who is behind the site.

Extended Validation (EV). The most thorough business vetting. Historically this turned the browser address bar green; modern browsers no longer do that, but the certificate details still show the verified organization name.

For encryption strength, all three are equal. The difference is how much identity proof sits behind the padlock.

Free SSL vs paid SSL at InterProWebHost

Your hosting account can secure your site with a free SSL certificate automatically. This covers the encryption and the padlock that most websites need, and it renews on its own. See How to Install a Free SSL Certificate for the steps.

Paid certificates from authorities like RapidSSL, GeoTrust, and DigiCert make sense when you need organization validation, a warranty, or a certificate that covers many subdomains under one purchase. If you take payments or handle sensitive customer data, the added identity assurance of an OV certificate is worth considering. Our Launch Checklist reminds you to verify SSL before any launch.

What SSL cannot do

SSL protects information while it travels. It does not stop hackers from breaking into your site, it does not clean up malware, and it does not make weak passwords strong. A site with SSL can still be hacked through an outdated plugin or a stolen password. Treat SSL as the lock on your front door: essential, but not a substitute for the alarm system inside.

Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us your domain and what you would like the certificate to cover. We will recommend the right option.

Every browser shows a small padlock next to your website’s address, and visitors have learned to look for it before they trust a site.
