No extra software needed. By the end of this article, you will know how to upload files, organize folders, and avoid the two mistakes that break websites.

Opening File Manager

Log in to your client area, open My Services, click your hosting plan, and open cPanel. Click the File Manager icon. You will see a folder tree on the left and file listings on the right. Your website’s publicly visible files live in the
public_html
folder. Anything outside
public_html
is not reachable by visitors, which makes it a good place for private files like backups.

Uploading files

Navigate into the folder where the file should go. For your main website, that is
public_html
. For an image used on a specific page, it might be a subfolder like
public_html/images
.

Click Upload in the top toolbar. A new browser tab opens with a drop zone.

Drag your files into the drop zone or click Select File to browse. The upload starts immediately and shows progress per file.

When the progress bar shows complete, close the tab and click Go Back or refresh File Manager to see your files.

Uploads go to whatever folder you had open when you clicked Upload, so always check your location first. Uploading a logo while sitting in the wrong folder is the most common File Manager mishap, and it is fixed by simply moving the file.

Organizing with folders

Create folders with the New Folder button. Sensible organization now saves headaches later. A simple structure that works for most small business sites:

public_html/images
for photos and graphics

public_html/documents
for PDFs like menus, brochures, and price lists

public_html/downloads
for files visitors download

Use lowercase folder names with no spaces. Spaces in file and folder names cause broken links more often than anything else in File Manager. Use hyphens instead, like
company-brochure.pdf
rather than
Company Brochure.pdf
.

Moving, renaming, and deleting

Select a file and use the toolbar buttons to move, rename, copy, or delete it. Moving works like dragging between folders on your computer. Renaming is safe for documents and images, but be careful renaming files that your website references. If a page links to
images/logo.png
and you rename it to
images/logo-new.png
, the page will show a broken image until the link is updated too.

Deleting is permanent. There is no recycle bin in File Manager. If you are unsure, download a copy to your computer first, or take a backup before reorganizing.

The two mistakes that break websites

1. Renaming or moving WordPress core files. If your site runs WordPress, leave the WordPress system files and folders (
wp-admin
,
wp-includes
, and files starting with
wp-
) exactly where they are. Your content lives in
wp-content
, and even there, let WordPress itself handle uploads through the dashboard rather than uploading into its folders by hand.

2. Changing file permissions casually. Every file has permission settings controlling who can read or modify it. The defaults are correct for websites. Do not change permissions unless a trusted guide or our support team tells you to, because wrong permissions can take a site offline or expose it.

Editing a file in place

For small text edits, right click a file and choose Edit. This works well for tweaking a text file or a simple HTML page. For anything substantial, edit the file on your computer and re-upload it instead. The built in editor has no undo beyond your browser session.

Still stuck? Open a support ticket and tell us what you are trying to upload or organize. We will guide you through it.

Every image, page, and document on your website is a file sitting on your hosting account, and cPanel’s File Manager is how you work with those files directly in your browser.
